Should I Take BC Or Not?
A myPCOSteam Member asked a question πŸ’

I'm a bit confused. Doctor suggested that I go back on BC to help PCOS. I told them that I am worried that BC will make me gain. They said no- BC is going to help to reduce symptoms of PCOS including weight gain. But- I've read that some still gain from BC. And I'm a bit worried that it'll hurt my fertility in future if I want to have a child.

(In hs, I've taken Loestrin 24Fe to help to reduce heavy period flow. Then in college, Nuvaring, but didn't like using it. Then after college, Depo-Prov… read more

Yeah, I would say if you are not comfortable taking it and want to explore other options keep looking. And maybe even consider another doctor. I have a sister and two close friends in medical school and they know about my PCOS. They are basically told to prescribe BC right away, so sometimes when doctors are telling you you should take it it is simply because that's all they know. Not dissing doctors or anything but when they have so much they need to be aware of and know about they aren't necessarily going to stray from the drilled in treatment they learned in school. As for gaining weight, I would suggest spending some time looking at research article on Google Scholar about weight gain and BC. I haven't done that myself yet so I am not sure if that is a statistically significant occurrence.

I am only one example and by no means suggesting that what I do is right for everyone, but I have been off birth control for almost a year (by the recommendation of an awesome doctor I found) and I have felt great. I didn't particularly enjoy BC and I have been really working to reduce symptoms on my own and it's been working for me.

Lastly though, I want to point out that one of the reasons BC is recommended so frequently is that if your body is not shedding the endometrial lining in the uterus during a period, then your chances of cancer greatly increase. This is an issue for women with PCOS because our periods are so sporadic and sometimes too light. So, this is why I still think it's important to talk more with your doctor or find another that will listen. Because in some cases of PCOS it probably is better to take BC and in others not.

Bc is like a band aid. Finding other ways to help resolve more long term is better. I would do research and finding what might work for you. Bc produces a pill induced period so it’s not natural.
