Does Almost Everyone With PCOS Struggle With Fertility,
A myPCOSteam Member asked a question 💭

My 21 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with PCOS. Her main symptom was getting her period maybe only twice a year. Blood tests confirmed her hormones were totally out of wack and she was not ovulating in addition to having an under active thyroid. She did not show cysts on her ovaries when she had her sonogram but that could just mean she didn’t have cysts at that time. She was diagnosed based on her blood work up showing a big problem so her case is pretty severe. She has a lot of… read more

So I will tell you this sounds a lot like my story. I was 24 though and just got with my husband now. We wanted to try to have kids and when I turned 21 I started to have periods here and there. So once he proposed and we set the date I got on birth control. Let me tell you up to this point I had always been 150 pounds. Once I started birth control within 3 months I was at 230. I was like what the heck happened. So I went to my doctor and they said I was just not eating right. I was eating the same amount as before so that made no sense to me. My husband and I decided that I would get off the birth control and if we got pregnant well ok. Once off I did drop to 200 but have not been able to get under that. After marriage we tried some more to get pregnant. Every time I went to the doctor because I was discouraged she said she would not help me because I was just too fat to get pregnant. As you can imagine my mother and mother in law were not happy with that. I got a second opinion and found out that just like your daughter I had PCOS (also without the cyst) and an under active thyroid. They told me that the birth control angered it and that is why it came out. I am on metformin and a thyroid medication. Depending on how sever her PCOS is meaning how resistant her ovaries are will depend on if she can get pregnant naturally. I personally ended up trying the IUI (Intrauterine insemination) in hopes that my ovaries just needed help. It came down to mine being really resistant and we had to go to the IVF (In vitro fertilization). I will tell you after the 3rd attempt I can tell you I am 2 months away from meeting out baby boy. So it is possible for you daughter to get pregnant. Just different factors to involve. As for a future husband and good man will understand. My husband and I got married knowing something was wrong but that did not stop him from loving me and sticking with me. I hope this helps.

Thank you for sharing your story. I am very happy you are now pregnant with your baby boy. It gives me hope that in the future maybe my daughter will be able to get pregnant as well, even if she needs help doing so. I also hope if she ever meets someone that she wants to build a future with, they are as understanding as your husband has been. Thanks for giving me hope for my daughter and good luck to you and your family!
