I had horrible GI side effects with Metformin, I was never able to get to the therapeutic dose they wanted me on (2000 mg). I started on the Victoza in December 2016, my A1C is down, my weight is down 23 lbs (in combination with diet, exercise, and another medical condition).
As an alternative, it has been successful for me in the first five months. We are going to continue to monitor my blood work to see how everything progresses. I do always have some concerns to watch as I have some long term GI issues I am starting to work out now.
My mom started taking it about a month ago, and she has lost about seven pounds. She has a slight case of type 2 diabetes and has all the symptoms that come with untreated pcos. She unequivocally followed the instructions and increased the dose as her doctor and the instructions indicated but she felt really sick the entire time. She got used to the mid-level dose but just could not stomach the maximum dose, even after going back to the mid level dose for awhile and then increasing it once again after more time had passed. Her levels are actually fine on this middle dose, though her doctor wants her I the highest dose. I think that's crazy, given how horrible she feels AND that her levels were all good on the dose that seems to agree with her.
She basically feels sick when eating, gets full very fast, and has no appetite. The drug works by delaying the emptying of your stomach, thereby delaying spikes in blood sugar. We think the weight loss is partly due to feeling sick and not eating. Also worth noting, she was getting bruising at the injection site. The injection is via an epi-pen type device. Hope this helps, if you want to know more please feel free to ask!
