Basically I've been thrown under the bus by GP's etc because they don't need to address my fertility. Even I'M not sure what symptoms I have/should be looking for! All the literature inside the box deals with pregnancy which obvs isn't why I'm taking them! Should I be asking for more tests? Or a referral? PCOS is a endocrine issue so a lot of things are tied into your system are effected plus it is very much possible to have multiple medical conditions that interact with each other so it can be hard to know where one starts and the other stops.
Hi Audrey,
Yes you should definitely be asking for a referral. The issues you should be looking out for are wide and varied! A lot of it depends on what kind of PCOS you have. Do you struggle with your weight? Have you previously had joint pain or autoimmune issues? Do you have male pattern hair (i.e. whiskers on your chin and thinning patches on your head, hairy body)? Trouble with sleeping or maintaining a regular routine? Irregular and sometimes heavy and painful periods? These are all symptoms of PCOS. Some surgeries have PCOS clinics but your GP should be able to provide you with support. Standard treatment here in the UK is the contraceptive pill for those who can tolerate it. For everyone else, it's metformin and spironolactone but all of those drugs come with unpleasant side effects so it's a balance. At the very least you should be managing your diet to reduce symptoms.
