Ghost Period Cramps?
A myPCOSteam Member asked a question 💭

Does anyone else with PCOS not get their period but get really bad cramps? I haven't had my period (bleeding) in over 9 months but sometimes once a month I get the WORST cramp-like pains. Anybody else get this and how do you deal with it?!?

Hi. My daughter would also get period like cramps with no period for months. It is suspected when this happened it was a cyst or maybe more than one on her ovary or ovaries since she was diagnosed with PCOS but no cysts showed on her sonogram at the time but when she would get the cramps with no period, it is possible there were cysts at that time. The only way to really know for sure would be to have a sonogram when the cramps are there and maybe they could check for cysts but it makes sense that would cause your pain if you are not getting your period.

Hi! I actually just had an ultrasound test and they did find a large amount of smaller cysts in my ovaries, which they assumed were causing the pain. I'm 22 and I've been experiences PCOS symptoms for the past 10 years (since I got my first period at 12) such as difficulty with weight loss, a black rash around my neck/chest area, extreme hair loss, and horrible fatigue to name some. I went to the doctor every single year for 10 years for every single symptom seperately and never once did they mention PCOS. I was told I had alopecia, stress, a bad metabolism or that I was even faking my level of period pain. A doctor once even scolded me for not losing weight and said that as long I stayed this weight, my symptoms would never get better. Obviously at the time I was heartbroken because I was doing everything right with my exercise and diet and just couldn't seem to lose the weight. Now knowing that physically I could not due to my PCOS is both relieving AND extremely frustrating. I'm so glad your daughter has you because, much like my own mom, it seems like you are being proactive about the diagnosis and wanting to learn more and I applaud you for that. I just wanted to share my story and my frustrations and tell you that your advice and care means something much greater than you think. From a girl who suffered for 10 years being misdiagnosed, I can't thank you enough just for that advice.

Hi. I joined this group even though I do not have PCOS, but my 21 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with it so I thought joining would help inform me more by reading about others and their experience with PCOS. After reading your post I had to respond by saying my daughter experiences exactly what you are experiencing in getting no periods but cramping each month like she is experiencing a period. She just started seeing an endocrinologist that I hope can help her regulate her PCOS. Are you seeing an endocrinologist? It may be a good idea since if you are going so long without getting your period, it needs to be checked out. You could be experiencing cysts that are causing the pain each month, so see your GYN and they can run tests and possibly refer you to an endocrinologist if needed.
