Experiences With Metformin For PCOS
A myPCOSteam Member asked a question 💭

I recently went to the doctor, since I just got insurance through my job. Given my history with PCOS, they ran labs to test all my levels , in order to best treat and control my symptoms. I got the blood test back yesterday, and I was prescribed 3 medications for various symptoms I have. One of the medications is Metformin, and I was wondering what was y'all's experience with the medication. I have been kind of on edge thinking about having to take it, as I wont be able to get in until Monday.

I had a bad experience with metformin myself snd I take inositol which works well but that doesn’t mean to say it won’t work for you. I tried everything the dr offered me before going the natural way . I wish metformin worked for me because taking inositol with metformin could be brilliant

I was talking to a docotor who has PCOS while at the emergency center and she mentioned to me she was on and it worked for a time but now she is max levels and it's not working. I myself am not on it but I am taking inisotol and have heard good things. Haven't seen much but plan to test to see when I run out if it was helping me or not.

I'm currently taking metformin and the first few weeks I been feeling bloated, stomach cramps, and diarrhea. I felt like I was going to throw up but my body getting use to the medication. It helps me to lessen my exercise and maintain my weight which makes a great difference.

Hi, I've copied what I wrote to Kim. She asked about metformin for her daughter. Hope this helps you a bit. If I understand correctly, Inositol does the same as metformin, but with less side effects.

Hi Kim, this is exactly my story. I too got metformin. What was good, i lost some weight, not alot though about 7 kilos and my acne got less. But the side effects were terrible. I was extremely nauseous, i couldnt eat during the day, i started at dinnertime. I trew up everyday. My had lots of headaches, which turned into migranes. My eyesight got less. When i was 24 i stopped taking them because my sugarlevels droppes so low i collapesed during work, at home or in the subway. The side effects are still here, 4 years later. But the nauseous and throwing up has lessend. I tried taking them again a few months ago, but felt so terrible i quit again. My dietitian said that taking them as young as 14 has messed up my hormones more than pcos has. Because now it realy is a balancing act over what i eat and how much exercises i do and at what time and everything. I need to eat dinner at the lastes as 6 pm or i will collapse. In fact, yesterday i did collapse again and now im still feeling off. I take powder to have good bowlmovement. Make sure your daughter vitamines and minerals are checked regularly. If you can, buy a machine that can measure her sugar levels in her blood so if her levels are to low(yawning, sleepy, white face, shaking are my symptoms when its to low) you can give her dextrose, chew one, and let the other melt under her tongue. I know soda like cola is bad, but make sure she has one bottle of it with her allways. It really helps because of the high suger content. Im sorry if this all scares you, but i think you really need to look out for. It is scary as hell to go through this, when i collapse im scared to be alone and cling to someone like they are my lifeline. Depression was one of my other symptoms too. And i still deal with that too..
