Pcos A Thing Of The Past?
A myPCOSteam Member asked a question 💭

Went to a gynecologist tonight due to fibroids in uterus. Did the internal ultrasound to check on my pcos but apparently they are gone. I have bigger issues and currently freaking out as one fibroid needs investigating but the doc said my pcos is a thing of the past. I’m confused can pcos ever go away and why is my body not showing signs of it. I know it sounds stupid I should be happy right but I feel like there is information missing here

Based on my research PCOS is determined by 3 factors. Cysts in ovaries, high levels of androgens, and irregular periods. You need at least 2 out of 3 to have the diagnosis. So technically you can have POCS without cysts. I didn’t have cysts in the beginning until years later. My OBG has also told me you don’t technically need to have cysts for the diagnosis. PCOS is normally a life long diagnosis that can only be managed and is rarely cured

I’d ask more question and do tests for testosterone levels

Ok so when I was 25 and trying to get pregnant, my periods were like 3 months apart, testosterone was slightly high, weight gain as soon as I got off the pill and I had cysts on my ovaries. After 2 years of trying I went to see a specialist who confirmed PCOS. He put me on metformin and then clomid and I got pregnant. I am now 49, decided to go off the pill and after a year and a half of being off the pill, hormones appear to be ok although testosterone hasn’t been checked, periods are coming every 3-3.5 weeks apart, which I never got that frequently before. Weight gain, have had hair on my chin since being a teenager but now the gyno says, no cysts in ovaries, any irregular periods could be due to my age as I may start pre menopause, hairy chin and thinning hair again coz of my age, and all she could find were fibroids in my uterus and to stop worrying about PCOS as it is no longer relevant.. Since when was 49 considered old for starters? My gut is telling me my fibroids are not my only issue and that my PCOS is still there somewhere but examinations are not really confirming it. Anyway, since my weight gain is a little out of control the doctor agreed to put me in metformin….I’m curious to see if my physical PCOS symptoms which affect my weight my skin etc improve or not l. Anyone else been on metformin even if their insulin is fine? If yes how did you find it?
