Overview
Laser hair removal is a medical procedure to reduce unwanted hair on a long-term basis.

Laser hair removal works best on those with dark hair. People with blond, red, gray, or white hair may not be good candidates for laser hair removal. Some types of lasers work better on those with light skin. Laser hair removal cannot be used around the eyes.

What does it involve?
The goal of laser hair removal is to reduce the amount of hair in target areas for an extended period of time.

Choose a facility where the laser will be operated or supervised by an experienced doctor board-certified in dermatology or cosmetic surgery.

You may shave before laser hair removal, but avoid plucking, waxing, or using electrolysis before the laser procedure. Avoid tanning beds and exposure to sunlight before and immediately after laser hair removal.

Before laser hair removal, the doctor may apply a topical anesthetic to your skin. During the laser procedure, the doctor will pass a handheld laser instrument over your skin. You may experience some discomfort.

You will need four to six treatments to achieve long-term hair loss. Procedures are timed about six weeks apart. You may need maintenance treatments every six to 12 months to prolong the effects.

Recovery
After the procedure, you may have some redness and swelling in treated areas.

Results
Results of laser hair removal vary widely depending on your hair, skin, and the area that is treated.

Constraints
Laser hair removal is not permanent.

Laser hair removal may cause temporary skin irritation, blistering, crusting, or discoloration.

Laser hair removal may cause scarring or permanent changes to the color of the hair treated.

Rarely, laser hair removal can cause hair to grow excessively in treated areas.

Laser hair removal devices designed to be used at home are unlikely to be as effective as medical-grade lasers available at a treatment center.

It is unlikely that health insurance will cover laser hair removal. Costs for laser hair removal can be high.
