Has Anyone Tried Low Dose Naltrexone?

A myPCOSteam Member asked a question 💭

So, I had a consultation appointment with a weight specialist today... She was really nice, and thorough and really listened to me. But, I think her area is straight up bariatric surgery, and I'm not really into that right now. I actually wanted to try low-dose naltrexone, but couldn't muster the courage to bring it up to her. She and all my other Dr.'s want me to try a non-insulin injectable for my T2D and weight. But, I've read people are losing a lot more weight on the low dose naltrexone… read more

No, it is really old actually. For PCOS it is off-label use. It is used for dampening addictive cravings in people with alcohol and drug addictions. I guess it blocks endorphin receptors so that the brain gets signaled to make more endorphins. If you have more endorphins internally, you don't crave getting that feeling from an outside source. For some reason, it has these other positives for people with PCOS too. People lose like 30-40 lbs on it! :-o

Where is your doctor? I diet and exercise regularly just to maintain my obesity from becoming even worse. Nothing seems to work and doctors look at me like I'm a liar. I need a doc who will listen.

My doc began me on this October last year as a prescription named contrave. It is pricey but when you break it down into the two cheaper generic components, it is naltrexone and Wellbutrin. It decreases cravings for things. Your brain is triggered in the same location if you are smoking or eating sugar. Then the Wellbutrin kicks in as a little extra energy boost. I was also given a diet/meal plan at the same time. Down 30 lbs :) I have to check in with them every three months before getting refills. Now that I'm getting into better eating habits, we will work on weaning back off both scripts. It was a good jump start though!!

I would really rather start on that than the non-insulin injections they want me on, because of the risks of pancreatitis or thyroid cancer. I know if I lost 30lbs, my blood sugars would be much better anyway! But getting a doctor to agree to give it a try doesn't seem easy. :(
