Hair Loss/thinning
A myPCOSteam Member asked a question 💭

Hi, im new here and was really hoping to get some advice. Ive been diagnosed but waiting to go to a different doctor so my PCOS is untreated at the moment. Ive seen that hair loss is a symptom. I had every other symptom for a while now but no hair loss. Then seemingly overnight half my hair was gone 😔. I noticed a lot of thinning in the back especially when my hair is wet. Now though im seeing bald patches in the front. I was afraid if i didnt do anything i’d lose all my hair before i even got… read more

@A myPCOSteam Member Thank you. I'm sorry it is happening to you too! I'm 24 so was really confused when my hair started falling out too! I had handfuls of hair falling out every time I washed my hair or would brush it or even when I wasn't touching it, it was falling out like crazy. It has actually stopped falling out now. I still lose some hairs but I think I'm losing a normal amount now. In the comment above I was saying my doctor put me on medicine to control my hormones and told me it should help with my hair in a few months, for sure in 3. It took about 5-6 months but now I do see a difference and it has seemed to stop. So far I don't think the areas I lost hair from have grown back in unfortunately but at least Im not losing anymore. I am hoping maybe if i just give it some time I will start to see some new growth soon! My doctor put me on a birth control (norethindrone and ethinyl estradiol ) combination. She also put me on Spironolactone which is the one I think helped with the hair loss. I have always gotten my periods but they are extremely heavy so I am anemic which can make hair loss worse so i needed more iron.. I take multivitamins with iron and folic acid. Those two are important for your hair. I also take Biotin. Maybe you can get tested to see if you have any vitamin deficiencies, a lot of those can make hair loss worse too. When my hormones were really out of control it changed my texture too so my hair was dry and breaking but the pills seem to be helping with that along with using a lot of deep conditioners. I use organic coconut oil for a few hours in my hair as a moisturizer and a Lanza moisture deep conditioning mask. My hairstylist just said today my hair has been growing a lot. So look into some of those vitamins and conditioners to take care of the rest of your hair. If you can get some medicine maybe that would help too. That is really the only thing that ended up working for me. Im not sure if the spots I lost will grow back in though. I made an appointment with a dermatologist too to see if they recommended anything to help regrow but that is still a few months away.. Let me know how it goes for you! Id love to hear how things work out and what they recommend! Hopefully we can find some solutions

I experienced my worst hair loss during a time when I was most stressed . I have noticed that stress is my trigger for hair loss with PCOS so for me I first focus on stress reduction. On top of that I would recommend using as little hair products as you can for awhile. When I stopped doing that my hair started getting better. Additionally, I mix apple cider vinegar in with my shampoo (About 1:1 ratio now but you can add in less at first and see what happens). My hair feels a lot better after showering with the apple cider vinegar. I would also urge you to look into research regarding rice bran oil. I have seen it in several published articles, like this one: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24389480
I am currently experimenting with one I came across at a research center in Thailand. Not sure if it works yet but if it does I will recommend it!

I've noticed some loss/thinning and I do believe it has to do with my PCOS and hypothryoidism. I haven't really tried anything yet but I was going to try the new Paul Mitchell shampoo that is suppose to help with this problem. I've know women who have tried Rogaine with some good results. Hope you find some relief from this and that you found a doctor is understanding.

Also, my mom is in denial about my hair loss. I'm going to the dermatologist in a few days and fear they may also try to downplay my symptoms.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. Same happened to me. Overnight, my hair was gone with my period. I'm older too at 30 years old so it was shocking this suddenly happened to me. I hope we can find something. I'm heartbroken about the hair.
